11/19/2023 0 Comments Andy bernard cornellI talked to previous graduation speakers. Like any good Cornell student, I tried to get out ahead of this. And this speech has been the part of the job that made me the most nervous. We made it! I've had the unique pleasure to serve as your class president since March of our freshman year. Welcome, my fellow members of the class of 2014. I would now like to introduce my friend and president of the class of 2014, Rob Callahan, to deliver the senior address. But it doesn't matter, because we will get through it together just as we did the past four years as the class of 2014 of Cornell University. We don't know what challenges we're going to face. We don't know what these responsibilities are going to be. And that will come with a new chapter of responsibilities. In just a short 24 hours, we will officially become alumni of this university. The greatest part about our Cornell family is that no matter where we are, we will always have a home on the Hill. Although we are facing uncertainty as we leave Cornell, we are fortunate enough to have our Cornell family and experiences that will help us achieve our goals and make us future leaders. And finally, we've grown through the adventures that you'll never tell your parents about. We have grown by learning something new about each other every day. We have grown through expected or unexpected conversations with friends. We've celebrated the New York City Tech campus but mostly beating Stanford. We've seen the addition of Milstein Hall, Gates Hall, and the Dairy Bar. So how have your experiences helped you grow while you've been here? We've seen Cornell transform through the removal of open parties. They started with long dinners at RPCC our freshman year that eventually led to the late nights at bars our senior year. ![]() On the other hand, we have an unforgettable memories here with the families that we've created here at Cornell. ![]() We've endured difficult classes and professors, long nights in the libraries, and endless days of snow with no sunshine. After countless hours of hard work and a handful of fun times, we find ourselves here again in this very spot, nervous, anxious, yet excited, but this time to enter the real world.Įven though we may have similar feelings today, as we did four years ago, I encourage you to think about the different types of experiences you've had while you've been here at Cornell. ![]() We were nervous, anxious, yet so excited to begin our journey here at Cornell. It's hard to believe that just a short four years ago we were sitting here in this very spot. And it is both an honor and a privilege to be among the first to welcome you to the 2014 convocation ceremony and the beginning of Cornell University's 146th commencement weekend. Though O’Brien revealed scant few details about his former classmate besides mentions of Bernard’s affability and his advanced early 1980s technology, Helms remarked that the real Bernard sounds much more sufferable than the character who became Helms’ big break, saying, “Greg (Daniels) always told me that he named the character after his friend, and as the show went on, Andy Bernard was a pretty toxic fellow.” Helms did clarify, though, “I adored Andy Bernard and tried to imbue him with a lot of, like, pathos and humanity despite, you know, some toxic inclinations.JENNIFER LEE: Good afternoon, friends and family, faculty, members of the administration, distinguished guests, and most importantly, members of the class of 2014. The legendary late-night host made no mention of the real Bernard’s singing ability or his feelings toward sweaters - O’Brien only dated himself by recalling how Bernard’s Apple IIe desktop computer dwarfed O’Brien’s own electric typewriter. “(Bernard) was very nice, a very nice person, but I think he was the first person I saw who had a computer on his desk,” O’Brien explained of his Harvard classmate with whom he shared a freshman year dorm building.
